I divide my time between Santa Cruz, California and the Sierra Nevada Foothills in California My studio is on the lower level of my home – below the main living area. I love that it is separate so that when I’m down there I feel miles away, but I can also pop up and down the stairs at any time. Can't live without... I live on the Kapiti Coast in New Zealand My studio is where I go to come back to myself, day after day. What it looks like is less important than what I do in the space. I have to remind myself of this over and over again as my space is a work in progress. gave up my big beautiful purpose built studio in Denver when I moved to New Zealand. And while I left that space behind - what I didn't leave behind is myself. And my need and desire to create. Using my space as the reason I can't create is simply and excuse. I can make beauty anywhere I believe I can. Can't live without... - A couple of squares of 100% dark chocolate in the morning - My seam ripper - not "A" seam ripper - but "My" seam ripper. The purple one I've been using since the mid 1970s. Originally purchased for my home ec class in jr high. In all of it's cheap raggedy glory it has a nice smooth rounded end. I use that feature to my advantage. I've never been able to find a similar one. When I pick up a newer one, the pointy end very rudely cuts threads. - My love of making - Heap of colors of thread (which of course I inventory in a spreadsheet) - Great audio books - My studio sketchbook - for my ideas, my work in progress and keeping track of the time I put into the studio - My sewing table, where my sewing machine sits flush with the table top. - While actually can live without this and did for my first year in New Zealand - my shoulders are much happier with good ergonomics - Ibuprofen - for those days I spend 8 hours in the studio without taking a break me out there in the wild world My studio space is my home and my garden which is sitting in the foothills south of Richmond overlooking the Waimea Plains, Tasman Bay and the Southern Alps. I cannot separate my art from my life, and this stimulating environment, enables me to be creative and challenge myself without leaving home! Can't live without... 1. My creative home/studio space with its expansive views 2.The large antique armchair where I work on a daily basis 3. The Nelson Recycling Centre 4. The contact with students and other artist 5. I have two messy art spaces in my home where you will find me on most days. The views I observe daily from my studio window inspire me to create art centred on my local environment. It’s a place that is calm and peaceful and fills me up with so many ideas. Can't live without... Sea air My three Dogs and a cat Books and magazines A gelliplate Treasures I’ve found on our beach My garden I live in Australia’s Capital, Canberra – a place of four seasons. The last few years have been my big chance to buckle down and work on 'gunna do’ projects. The lack of distractions and the gift of time allowed me to finish a major embroidery work and write about my process. My book Improv Embroidery exposed me to new experiences, podcasts, magazine reviews, and a studio head shot for publications. Have you noticed how we all show our work and studio but no faces? So here I am. No longer invisible. Editor's Note... This is the link to purchase Carol's Improv Embroidery book... Can't live without... My husband who does technical support, says nice things about my work and never says no. My dog Buddy, follows me to the studio before the sun comes up and his snoring Thread, needle and a bit of fabric keeps me as happy A new challenge and for me that was writing a book Natural light sunshine and a bit of warmth Living on the beautiful Bellarine Peninsular 30 minutes around the bay from Geelong is a peaceful existence, filled with natural wonders. The birdlife is abundant, and the native flora is stunning and fills each season with wonder. My space incorporates the outdoors as well as the indoors. I gain my inspiration to make work from my daily walks in the environment. The environment informs my palette. One thing I have learned from creating over many years is that sometimes being challenged in a space can produce great work. Images of my space. Images from an Open Studio trail event. My storage is important to hold all my finished works and collage papers for future work. I live in McCrae on the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria. My studio is in the back garden near our mini orchard and the vegetable garden. The space is small, but that ensures I am tidy. My indigo vat lives beside the studio and the verandah is where dye pots simmer. Can't live without... Bird song My books The collection of stones, bones and shells that inspire me. I live in an adobe house on the foothills of Atawahi, Nelson (Top of the South Island), New Zealand overlooking the Nelson Haven and Tasman Bay. The Nelson Tasman region is home to a vibrant arts community and is surrounded three national parks. My studio space is at the centre of our home. Designed together with my partner and constructed from local clay adobe blocks that capture energy from the sun. Every time I enter the studio I feel embraced by its warmth, soft rendered walls, natural light, garden access and a slither of the view of Tasman Bay. Can't live without...
I live in middle America I live in the woods in a house we built twenty years ago. Consisting of a design studio, a dye studio and a classroom studio, my studio is filled with inspiration—cobalt blue bottles, joyful reminders, and my children’s art. Studio security is provided by Zane, a 90-pound English Golden Retriever and a smart tabby cat who steals balls of pearl cotton. Can't live without...
I live in Upper Duroby, northern NSW, a small rural community. “My studio overlooks the garden, is very quiet, contains all my tools, materials and books.
