Indigo Dyed, Layered, Salvaged Textiles
Household textile waste has been hand-dyed with natural indigo, then layered one piece at a time, and hand cut. Motivated by the scale of textile waste going into landfill, the material is reimagined as earth strata, in monument form. Indigo dye is a potent motif working through ecological concerns, with far reaching histories of cultivation and production, as well as complex associations with globalisation, slave trade and industrialisation. Gradations of blue are both substance and action, also echoing tipping points or thresholds in both impacts of consumption and waste on climate, and our ability to perceive change.
