Reports of the accelerating rate of extinction of many species of butterfly due to a lengthy history of detrimental farming practices and continual, spreading urbanisation are increasingly urgent. These have destroyed much of the habitat upon which butterflies depend.
Red warns that the current practices need to change. Conservationists are working with farmers and urban planners trying to stitch together strategies to remedy past errors.
The stitched butterfly resting on the land’s contours and the patterned fragments, suggest our collective memory of the richness that is disappearing. The transparent background also points to fading memories of a richer past world.
