The Boro Aesthetic: Creating Fiber Art Pieces Inspired by Japanese Textiles

Boro is a word used to describe Japanese textiles that have been pieced, patched, repaired and passed down from generation to generation. Boro textiles are utilitarian objects that are rich and sumptuous and that, although old in age, possess a contemporary aesthetic, and are rooted in sustainability. In this workshop students will begin by creating a Boro Sampler Book to learn the stitching, patching and mending vocabulary of Boro. Once the language is learned students will work on a fiber art piece that will meld their own style with the Boro Aesthetic. Additionally, students will look at mending and textile reuse traditions from other cultures around the world. Students will also learn stencil printing techniques and will incorporate their own imagery into their art piece. Students will be encouraged to bring old garments to deconstruct and combine with reclaimed materials, learned surface design techniques, and Boro inspired stitching and repair techniques to create their personal project. The instructor will share her collection of Japanese Boro textiles as well as look at contemporary artists creating in the spirit of Boro. This workshop is appropriate for beginners wanting to learn stitching and surface techniques or experienced artists and makers wanting to incorporate a new aesthetic into their work.
