Ballarat Autumn 6th – 11th April 2021
Inga is born in Kaunas, Lithuania, in 1972, since 2009 lives and works between Kaunas and Berlin. Her creative practice is mainly focused through a textile surface perspective. Over the years Inga has developed individual aesthetic language. Her textiles, mostly recognizable as moderated images, rhythmically stitched, come as sewn, embroidered wall canvases.
She has received numerous distinctions for her solo works, including the prestigious Embroidery Guild Grand Prize at international Art Of The Stitch Award (Birmingham 2007) and Grand Prize at Still-Life, Pfaff Challenge (London, 2007). Her works appear in the Lithuanian National Museum of MKC, many private collections.
STITCH into the WILD
In this workshop together we’ll explore sewing machine as a drawing tool. Before to get straight to the methodical and technical work we will talk about an inspiration and the ways of getting an art practice flow. We will start by studying local organics, taking pictures, sketching on paper. We will look inside the shapes, structures and textures given by nature. By this step we will experience how much knowledge about the world we may take for granted if we look more deeply around.
In a second step we’ll go to the stitch language. We will learn basic methods of how to apply simple sewing machine seam in a creative work. Along with the practice under the direct coaching, students will learn about choice of suitable materials and possible combinations with fabrics. Expectations of the workshop: every student will develop the skills of stitch-drawing technique. Create their own piece of work and achieve basics to develop their creativity in that direction individually.
No specific knowledge is needed, students of all levels are welcome, I’ll guide everyone according to situation and the level of knowledge. Of course it’s good if one knows basics of using the sewing machine, but even a beginner may learn basic steps quickly and I will teach about it during the workshop.
