GEMMA Black: Calligraphy & mark making as communication down through the ages

 Gemma is an Australian calligrapher and lettering designer from Tasmania, Australia.  She is a Churchill Fellow, a Fellow of the prestigious Calligraphy & Lettering Arts Society, UK and an honorary fellow of various book arts groups around the world. Gemma has taught in Europe, UK, USA and South Africa and you will find her works in private and public collections including the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, UK, the European Parliament and Parliament House Canberra.

Her work involves mostly calligraphy, book structures, decorative paper techniques, abstract watercolour painting and grounds of a calligraphic nature. She also has a great thirst for knowledge of all things alphabet related.

Calligraphy & mark making as communication down through the ages

Your journey begins with early writing systems. We will study the materials and methods used to communicate information by way of a hands-on approach. Fascinating inventions such as clay cuneiform tablets with their wedge shaped marks, Egyptian hieroglyphs and their meanings, pictograms, runes and various early Greek and Roman lettering.

You will fill your journal with a variety of samples such as cartouches, scratching’s, figures and marks that became the foundations of one of the most famous inventions of all, the Alphabet. This class will give you a thorough understanding of where our letters come from and their fit in the world of communication systems.
