About Clarissa Callesen

Clarissa Callesen is a sculptor and installation artist working with found objects and recycled textiles. Her work is inspired and informed by her choice of untraditional materials.  In choosing this medium, it is her objective to explore the margins and to find beauty and value in that which our society has discarded.  Clarissa has exhibited her art throughout the US, including the Museum of Northwest Art and solo exhibitions in Seattle, WA, Bellingham, WA, and Boise, ID. She was an artist in residence at Playa Artist Program in Summer Lake, OR, Brush Creek Foundation in Saratoga, WY, and Surel’s Place in Boise, ID. Her work has appeared in the books “Who’s your Dada?” and “Art without Waste”. Clarissa has been sharing her passion for creativity through teaching for the past 13yrs.  Her teaching style is down to earth and fun; embracing spontaneity and cherishing “mistakes” while challenging students to look at creativity in unusual and innovative ways.

Originality and Innovation, Exploring Abstraction in Two Mediums.

One of the ways my personal artistic journey has evolved and expanded is by working through a similar theme in two different mediums.  Allowing the challenges and advantages of each medium to inform the other, pushing the work to new levels of originality and depth.  My job is to guide and support you on this journey of exploration.  We will be working 2-D with sketching, painting, and collage and simultaneously working with fiber through embroidery, surface design, and sculpture. My focus will be on working in abstraction but there is always room for your personal directions in my classroom.  Mark making and texture will factor strongly into both mediums.  I have many new techniques to share as well as sources of inspiration and contemplation. Developing your creative process and finding your authenticity are subjects we will be exploring throughout the class. There will be time for creative exercises and time to develop finished works of art with guidance and support. For more information about my work visit www.clarissacallesen.com
