About Bryony Jennings

My name is Bryony Rose Jennings, I am a textile sculptor living in Portsmouth on the beautiful Hampshire coast. I work from home – juggling creature creation with the mothering of my two young sons.
As far back as I remember I have had magpie-like tendencies, collecting and hoarding being very much in my nature. My treasures of choice being vintage fabrics and embellishments. It is from this feathered nest of material that I create my textile menagerie, creatures that carry a childhoods worth of inspiration and imaginings.
My creative process is slow and considered, manipulating fabric into form,
allowing a personality to develop organically as I wrap, fold, stitch and stuff –
sewing a little soul and some magic into every creature I create. The fabrics I use give us as much direction to my work as the forms I create, a single scrap often inspiring the aesthetic of a whole piece.
I construct my animals using stuffed shapes and wire armature – embellishing with precious fabrics and using preloved household detritus and trinkets to add the glint of an eye, or the flash of a claw.
My depictions are stylised, I do not attempt to replicate the beauty and perfection of the animal kingdom, instead the idea of a specific species informs a more surreal interpretation, unbound by reality.

Textile Creatures – Mixed Media Sculptures

Sculpt your own characterful creature using textiles, wire and a needle and thread. Inspired by your gathered and reclaimed fabrics, we utilize pattern and texture, frayed edges and imperfections. Patching scraps together to capture an impression of life, soul and movement.
Starting small, we will each create a mouse or little bird, creating a form and exploring construction with wire, fabric, and stuffing. The techniques covered in this exercise will give a feel for the possibilities when embarking on a larger creature of your choice.
There is no limit to what you wish to create, your creature can be realistic or fantastical (bearing in mind the larger and more complex the piece – the longer it will take to complete)
In a unique approach to sculpting we will wrap, stuff, layer and hand stitch fabric, using wire armature where necessary, to realize your vision. As our work takes shape, the magic will happen, a personality will begin to emerge. At this point we can experiment with different methods of design, to build character and suggest expression using innovative sewing and wire working techniques.
