BARBARA FRANC

Barbara is a well recognised UK Sculptor, with works displayed all over the World from Ontario, Canada to Basel, Switzerland.  She was chosen to be one of the representatives of the British Craft Council at their inaugural stand at the London Design Fair and at the London Craft Week 2020. Commissioned works can be found at the prestigious Rosewood Hotel, London and Paul Smith Flagship Stores.

‘I love to continually try new materials and media, I suppose I am primarily known for my creatures made from wire and recycled objects but a secret passion is my love of fabrics, especially vintage natural fibres such as linens or woollen tweeds, it is such fun to make new textile animal sculptures from my treasured scrap collection of antique tapestries or brocades and bring them to life’

CREATE SHAGGY ANIMALS……TEXTILES WITH MIXED MEDIA

In this workshop, we will make our own ‘shaggy animal’, the basic armature is made from wire and then the form will be ‘padded out’ before covering it with a variety of textiles. The use of wire allows a lot of leeway in the pose you would like your creature to have which brings added life to the finished piece, but gravity does exert chaos on unbalanced poses!

Most of my own pieces are fairly large, for example the dogs can be up to 65cm high and would be too much, even for me, to complete in a week, but by working on smaller animals I can show you all the techniques you would need to scale up your own pieces after the workshop. We will work on making creatures such as rats, squirrels, small marsupials or possibly dogs but on a small scale. If you are feeling confident and would really like to start off on a larger piece, please do not expect to be finished within the time, you will have a lot of homework to do. The main aim is to give you the knowledge and confidence in creating your own work and most importantly, to have fun.

Ability: Very basic sewing skills, and use of pliers. Openness to trying something new, Sculpture’s very nature is to solve the problems that always seem to crop up, there is no right or wrong way in the solutions, each piece will be totally unique to you.
