Barbara Bryn Klare
Barbara Bryn Klare
San Francisco artist Barbara Bryn Klare uses rescued textiles, objects, drawings, text and natural and digital materials to weave together a rich and complex practice that explores themes of fragility, repair, and sustainability. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally including museums and galleries in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Brooklyn, South Korea, Canada and the UK among others, and has been reviewed in Huffington Post, Woven Tale Press, Art Bra Austin and Culturetr/ke. Barbara holds an MA Fine Art from the University of Creative Arts. For the first few years of her practice, Barbara worked exclusively with recycled fabric and she continues to think up new ways to be sustainable in her life and her work.
SUSTAINABLE TEXTILES: CLOTH MOSAICS
Enter a world in which recycled clothing, linens and remnants are a medium for creativity.
Experiment with making cloth tile mosaics inspired by scenes, shapes and colors from nature and the world around us. Did you know that the word mosaic derives from the Latin for “muse” ?
British artist and textile designer Lucienne Day created mosaics from squares of silk sewn together, called “silk mosaics.” In this workshop, you will create your own mosaic and have the opportunity to contribute to a large-scale community mosaic. The technique I will teach is easy to learn and uses nontoxic PVA glue, and requires only basic hand-eye coordination, cutting, glueing and a little patience. The process resembles working on a jigsaw puzzle.
REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE and RETHINK
Explore ways that fabric reuse can serve your art and the planet. Making mosaics from textiles is only one of many possibilities for reusing fabrics. I work with rescued textiles* (textiles that are “rescued” from becoming part of the landfill) in several different ways: as small objects, temporary street or land art and large-scale installations. At a recent show at Hugomento Gallery, I displayed works of art created exclusively using recycled textiles and thread.
