David Archer

David Archer is a contemporary automata maker, having 25 years practice, living and working from Adelaide, South Australia. Automata from the Greek automatos, “acting of one’s own will, self-moving” is often used to describe non-electric moving machines, especially those made to resemble human or animal actions. Archer’s creations are wry vehicles for ideas and narrations in the tradition of mechanical tableaux, found on Victorian and Edwardian seaside piers or as adjuncts to travelling fairs or circuses and like the original automata, they provide an escape into fantasy or give humorous insights into the human condition.

“wind Me Up!” Basic Automata

Make basic Automata alongside David Archer.
Automata is the art of making things move, (or come to life!) by using simple construction techniques and mechanisms.
The principles of Automata, your concept, design, manufacture, construction and decorating elements will all be covered in this FUN workshop.
Some experience with hand tools and basic handheld power tools is required.
Patience and a sense of humour also a bonus!
